Gastrointestinal Surgery for Severe Obesity
Severe obesity is a chronic condition that is difficult to treat through diet and exercise alone. Gastrointestinal surgery may be the best option for people who are severely obese and cannot lose weight by traditional means or who suffer from serious obesity-related health problems. The surgery promotes weight loss by restricting food intake and, in some operations, interrupting the digestive process. As in other treatments for obesity, the best results are achieved with healthy eating behaviors and regular physical activity.

Going Vegetarian?
Think that vegetarian diets are risky or just a passing phase? Not so! According to the American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada, a well-planned vegetarian diet can be a healthy alternative to standard meat-based eating styles for all age groups.

Get Into the Bean Scene
There's an old tradition of eating black-eyed peas on New Year's Day to ensure prosperity for the rest of the year. But if you want health as well as wealth, you may want to eat more legumes for the entire year. These humble beans boast big benefits for those who eat them often: they can reduce your risk of heart disease and strokes, help prevent cancer, and even save money.

Research Spotlight: Yeast & Fungi
-------------------------------------
Like weeds in a lawn, pathogenic fungi and yeasts (single-celled fungi) can invade and overtake our bodies. In people with healthy immune systems, cells called macrophages and neutrophils engulf these pathogens, nipping them in the bud. But when the immune system is weakened by disease or drugs, fungi – much like weeds in your garden, can grow unchecked.
Researchers at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research take a broad-based approach to the study of pathogenic yeasts and fungi, combining new genomic approaches and genetic techniques to boost scientists' knowledge of how fungal pathogens infect human, animal and plant hosts.
One key area of this research focuses on the mechanisms that enable yeasts such as Candida albicans to switch between two different forms. Like other yeasts, they multiply through cell division, or grow as filaments. "This ability to exist in two different forms give fungi a real advantage and flexibility to deal with immune systems," says researcher Robert T. Wheeler.
